Cornell University Sexual Assault Case: New Attention Sparks Inquiry
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed Letitia James, the state's attorney general, as a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of a gang rape involving a woman at Cornell University. The allegations surfaced after the woman claimed she was drugged and assaulted by several individuals at a fraternity house.
This ongoing case dates back to 2024 and was renewed after the alleged victim, referred to as Jane Doe in court documents, filed a civil lawsuit last month. This lawsuit has brought renewed scrutiny to how the case was previously managed.
Governor Hochul stated, “New information has raised serious questions about how this case was handled, and I’ve lost faith in the Tompkins County District Attorney’s ability to fairly oversee it.” As a consequence, the case has been reassigned from Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, who, prior to the recent developments, had opted not to file charges, citing insufficient evidence.
Hochul emphasised the importance of justice for the complainant, saying that she deserves to know that every fact will be examined thoroughly. The state attorney general is expected to gather evidence and, if necessary, prosecute the involved parties.
Letitia James expressed her commitment to the investigation, stating on social media that her office is prepared to lead a fact-based inquiry. In the wake of the civil lawsuit, Van Houten's office has since reopened the case, stating that much of the relevant information had not been initially communicated to them.
In her civil lawsuit, Jane Doe alleges she was assaulted by seven men, now referred to as the 'Cornell Seven.' She contends that the university failed to provide adequate protection and oversight following the incident. Previously, Van Houten had mentioned that a statement from Doe suggested the encounter might have been consensual and did not indicate that she had been drugged.
Cornell University has come under increased pressure to address the allegations, having previously submitted evidence from its own investigation, including Snapchat messages among fraternity members discussing an encounter with Doe.
Doe's attorney, Thomas Giuffra, has accused the district attorney's office of inconsistencies in their narrative throughout the media coverage.
An update on the investigation is anticipated from Governor Hochul and Attorney General James on Friday morning, local time.
