COP28 Climate Conference 2023: Global Leaders Gather in UAE
World leaders convene for COP28 in the UAE to address climate change. The conference aims to accelerate action on global climate initiatives.

The 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from 30 November to 12 December 2023. This year's conference aims to address urgent global climate issues and evaluate progress on the goals established in the Paris Agreement.

Leaders and representatives from nearly 200 countries will gather to discuss strategies for emissions reduction, climate finance, and sustainable development practices. The conference is particularly significant as it marks the first major climate summit since the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a stark warning about the accelerating impacts of climate change.

COP28 is expected to focus on enhancing commitments to curb global warming, especially in light of recent extreme weather events worldwide. The UAE, the host nation, has emphasised its commitment to promoting clean energy solutions and fostering discussions that could lead to more ambitious climate strategies.

Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, will preside over the conference. He stated, "We must converge at COP28 to innovate and implement actionable solutions that can facilitate our transition to a sustainable future."

In preparation for the event, several preliminary meetings and consultations have already taken place, aiming to align expectations and enhance cooperation among nations. These discussions have made it clear that while some countries are advancing their climate goals, others require significant support to meet their commitments.

Civil society groups, businesses, and environmental organisations are also planning to participate, pushing for greater transparency and accountability in the climate negotiations. Advocacy for strong regulations and investment in green technologies is expected to feature prominently in discussions.

COP28 comes at a critical juncture, as scientists warn that immediate global action is needed to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. As expectations build for COP28, the world watches closely to see if meaningful agreements can emerge from this pivotal summit.
