Conflict Erupts in Colombo Test: India Coach Comments on Sledging

The ongoing second Test between India and Sri Lanka, being held in Colombo, has witnessed heightened tensions with several players facing sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC). In a match marked by noticeable confrontations, two players, Yashasvi Jaiswal from India and Asitha Fernando of Sri Lanka, were each penalised 25% of their match fees and received demerit points after an altercation on the first day. Additionally, Sri Lankan bowler Prabath Jayasuriya was reprimanded and also received a demerit point for his inappropriate behaviour towards ground equipment following his dismissal on Day two.

The competitive atmosphere continued on the third day, where Sarfaraz Khan, who substituted for his injured teammate Rishabh Pant, further stirred emotions among the Sri Lankan players. His presence seemed to affect Dhananjaya de Silva and Niroshan Dickwella, both of whom were dismissed shortly after engaging with him.

Responding to the ongoing tensions, Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for India, expressed that he was not excessively concerned about the competitive exchanges. He noted, “I just think the heat and humidity sometimes get to the players. Although we need to play under the code and respect the game, a bit of banter between the boys is always good to see. It will definitely bring out the fighting and competitive spirit in the game.”

Morkel went on to clarify that he felt the exchanges were a natural part of the game and did not mind a little bit of chatter as long as it adhered to the codes of conduct.

The conflict reportedly began when Fernando dismissed Jaiswal and delivered a pointed remark as a send-off. This led Jaiswal to approach him, resulting in a brief head-to-head confrontation. Jayasuriya’s reprimand stemmed from an incident where he struck the boundary wedges with his bat in frustration while leaving the field after being dismissed by Manav Suthar at the end of Day 2.

As the match progresses, the dynamics reflect a mix of competitiveness and disciplinary action, underscoring the tension that can arise in high-stakes cricket matches.
