Clash Erupts at Uttar Pradesh Congress Event Amid Leadership Change
A violent confrontation took place at the Uttar Pradesh Congress headquarters as factions clash during a leadership transition ceremony.

A disturbance occurred at the Uttar Pradesh Congress headquarters in Lucknow on Sunday, involving supporters of Ajay Rai, former president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, and Mamta Chaudhary, the newly appointed women's state president. The incident unfolded during an event designed to welcome Aradhana Mishra as the new state president and Imran Masood as the working president.

Witnesses reported that Rai arrived at the venue as the ceremony was ongoing, leading to a confrontation between the two groups of supporters. Ajay Rai's faction was seen asking attendees to clear the way for him, while Chaudhary's supporters countered with scepticism, sparking an argument that escalated into a physical clash. Eyewitnesses indicated that items such as shoes were thrown during the altercation, capturing the attention of those present.

Following the incident, Ajay Rai addressed the situation with senior party officials, including Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, Aradhana Mishra, and Imran Masood. Rai expressed concerns that the incident harmed the party's image and demanded that Mamta Chaudhary be expelled from membership. Sources suggested that Rai received assurances from party leadership that the situation would be investigated and that appropriate measures would be taken.

The confrontation overshadowed a significant leadership transition event intended to consolidate party unity. Eyewitness accounts revealed that heated exchanges between supporters included verbal insults and physical confrontations, leading to a chaotic atmosphere at the Congress headquarters.

No formal response has yet been issued by the Congress leadership regarding the allegations of misconduct involving Mamta Chaudhary, nor have any actions taken against her been disclosed. This incident is particularly concerning as the party faces the challenge of revitalising its presence in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 state elections, following a disappointing performance in the previous elections.

After the event, Mamta Chaudhary was unable to provide comment regarding the confrontation. Meanwhile, party insiders have urged a focus on rebuilding the party's standing in the state rather than internal conflicts at this crucial juncture.
