CJP Criticises PM Modi for Comments at SRCC Centenary Event

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has voiced strong criticism of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his remarks at the centenary celebration of the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in Delhi. During the event, Modi referred to his earlier statement on 'Dimagi Naxals', a term he used to describe what he perceives as thoughtless critics among the younger generation. This comment was met with backlash from the CJP, which argues that such labelling is unhelpful and diminishes the significance of the issues currently faced by students.

CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka highlighted that the Prime Minister missed an opportunity to address pressing concerns regarding education, employment, and student welfare. Modi, speaking to a large assembly of students, had stated that those opposing his ideas were being 'exposed'. "As soon as I gave the 'Dimagi Naxal' homeopathy pill, all the 'Dimagi Naxals' started coming out one by one," he said, indirectly targeting his critics.

Saurav Das, another co-convener of CJP, described Modi's choice of words at this gathering as 'one of the most shameful things a Prime Minister can do'. He pointed out that, instead of criticising the younger generation, Modi could have addressed various concerns such as the protests by SRCC faculty over the denial of medical and childcare leave, poor infrastructure at the college, and the overwhelming competition students face today. Das argued that a Prime Minister's role should be to foster hope rather than resort to derogatory terms.

"A Prime Minister should give the youth hope, not use stupid labels. He should respond to their questions rather than vilify them for asking," Das added in a statement. Similarly, Ranka emphasised that Modi's speech should have spotlighted critical discussions related to education and the future challenges facing students. He lamented the lost opportunity for meaningful dialogue, stating, "You would have expected the Prime Minister to discuss what India is doing to set itself apart in the next 20 years. Instead, he resorted to 'Dimagi Naxal' nonsense."

Modi's address, lasting nearly 50 minutes, highlighted his assertion that India has transitioned from 'policy paralysis' to 'policy dynamism' over the years of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. He reflected on his previous visit to SRCC over 13 years ago, marking a contrast between the issues then and the current economic landscape. In 2013, he said, India faced numerous challenges including terror attacks, rampant inflation, and widespread corruption, while now the country is witnessing growth at 7.8%.

The sharp reactions from the CJP at this academic gathering underline the increasing tension between the government and segments of the youth, who often express their concerns vocally. Critics argue that the Prime Minister’s rhetoric may alienate young voices that are pivotal for the nation’s democratic process and future development.
