A Chinese national, Hu Congtai, has been deported to Hong Kong after being discovered staying illegally in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Officials confirmed that Hu was sent to Delhi on Wednesday before his deportation was finalised.

Hu Congtai was apprehended last week at a Srinagar hotel for lacking valid documentation concerning his stay in India. According to a local police officer, "A Chinese national, Congtai, has been deported from Srinagar Airport as his visa was not valid for entry into the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The passenger’s visa is only valid for Varanasi, Agra, New Delhi, Jaipur, Sarnath, Gaya, and Kushinagar. However, he entered Jammu and Kashmir without a valid visa."

The investigation into Hu’s activities began when local police received information about his presence. Following a preliminary inquiry, he was transferred from Srinagar to Delhi for deportation on the evening of 10 December.

The decision to deport Hu followed forensic analysis of his mobile phone, which revealed he had visited areas of strategic importance in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. Hu had entered India on 19 November with a tourist visa that allowed access to certain Buddhist religious sites, but he subsequently took a flight to Leh on 20 November without registering at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office at the airport.

His behaviour raised red flags after an army unit detected unusual internet activity linked to his browsing history, which suggested an interest in the deployment of paramilitary forces in the Kashmir Valley. This led officials to probe into his intentions for visiting the strategically significant Zanskar region in Ladakh late last month.

During his three-day stay in Ladakh, Hu toured the Zanskar region before arriving in Srinagar on 1 December. In his extensive questioning, he revealed that he had spent nine years in the United States studying physics at Boston University and expressed a passion for travelling.

Hu claimed ignorance regarding the restrictions on his visa, stating that he was unaware he could not travel to Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. He reportedly used his resemblance to locals to board the flight to Leh and obtained an Indian SIM card from the open market.

While in Srinagar, Hu stayed at an unregistered guesthouse and visited various locations, including a Buddhist site in Harwan. Data retrieved from his phone indicated he had explored the Awantipur ruins in South Kashmir and various areas of Srinagar, such as the Shankaracharya hill shrine, Hazratbal, and Mughal Gardens by Dal Lake.

Hu’s passport indicates he has travelled extensively, with previous visits to countries including the United States, New Zealand, Brazil, Fiji, and Hong Kong. His deportation underscores ongoing concerns regarding visa compliance and security in sensitive regions of India.
