China and North Korea Launch New Yalu River Bridge to Boost Trade
The New Yalu River Bridge aims to enhance trade and cooperation between China and North Korea amid strengthening diplomatic ties.

A recently inaugurated bridge linking China and North Korea marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations. The New Yalu River Bridge connects Dandong, located in northeastern China, with Sinuiju, a city in North Korea. This venture is part of Pyongyang's strategy to improve its economic standing by fostering closer ties with both Beijing and Moscow.

The launch ceremony took place on Thursday, as reported by China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. Video footage showcased trucks adorned with the national flags of China and North Korea, crossing the newly opened four-lane bridge. The structure bore both nations' flags, celebrating their collaboration.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang described the bridge as a "new landmark" signifying the traditional friendship between the two countries. He called upon both nations to leverage the bridge's opening for enhanced connectivity and the exploration of new cooperative ventures in border regions.

North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song also addressed the audience through a video message, underscoring the significance of the project.

Spanning 3 kilometres (approximately 1.8 miles), the bridge is anticipated to alleviate congestion on the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. The latter is a long-standing crossing on the same route, which includes a railway line and is restricted to one-way traffic at any given time.

Current trade dynamics reveal that over 70 per cent of the formal exchange between China and North Korea occurs via the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, based on Chinese statistics. Additionally, the South Korean government has identified at least 17 viable road and rail connections along the 1,400-kilometre (870-mile) boundary separating North Korea from China. The opening of the New Yalu River Bridge is expected to further facilitate economic interactions and reduce the load on existing infrastructure.
