China's J-16 Fighters to Compete Against Rafales in Egypt

The Eagles of Civilisation 2026 military exercise, featuring China's J-16 fighter jets and France's Dassault Rafale aircraft, commenced recently in Egypt. This joint air drill marks a significant collaboration between the Egyptian Air Force and the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The exercise began on 22 August 2026, as confirmed by the Egyptian Armed Forces.

Chinese J-16s and various support aircraft, including aerial refuelling and special-mission aircraft, were flown directly from China, covering a distance of approximately 6,000 kilometres. This year’s exercise is notable as it is the second instance of bilateral air drills between Egypt and China, a reflection of their deepening military cooperation. The previous year's drill showcased the J-10 fighters, which gained attention during their operational deployment in a conflict involving Indian and Pakistani air forces.

The J-16 is classified as a fourth and a half-generation multirole fighter, equipped with advanced avionics, sophisticated radar systems, and capabilities for electronic warfare. Built by AVIC Shenyang, the J-16 is a larger and heavier aircraft compared to the J-10, featuring two engines and a dual-seat configuration, thereby making it suitable for longer missions.

In contrast, the Egyptian Air Force employs Rafale fighters, which are known for their versatility and combat effectiveness. The first day of the current training exercises focused on one-on-one aerial combat scenarios between the J-16 and Rafale aircraft. Prior to engaging in training flights, pilots from both nations participated in technical briefings, discussing vital topics such as flight safety and airspace management.

These military exercises not only serve as a platform for operational training but also illustrate Egypt's strategy to strengthen defence ties with diverse international partners. Historically, Egypt has maintained a balanced military procurement approach, collaborating with both Western nations and enhancing ties with China over the last few decades.
