China Conducts Submarine Missile Test, Sparking Regional Concerns
China's ballistic missile test from a submarine in the Pacific has drawn backlash from Australia, Japan, and New Zealand, raising security alarms.

China has successfully carried out a test-launch of a long-range ballistic missile from one of its nuclear-powered submarines in the South Pacific. The missile, which landed in designated waters, was launched at 12:01 p.m. local time on July 6, 2026, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua. According to Xinhua, the test is part of China’s annual military training exercises and was not aimed at any specific target.

The Chinese government notified Australia ahead of the missile launch. However, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the action as "destabilising" for the region. She emphasised that this test reflects a broader military escalation by China that lacks the transparency expected by regional neighbours. "Australia has been clear that this proposed test is in the context of a rapid military build-up by China," Wong stated during a press conference in Suva, Fiji.

Japan's government also issued a statement expressing concern over China’s increased military activities. It confirmed that authorities were informed of the missile launch and urged China to reconsider its military actions. Additionally, Japan's coastguard received information regarding potential falling debris related to the missile test, which could land within Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The New Zealand government was alerted only hours before the launch took place. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters categorised the missile test as an "unwelcome and concerning development," asserting that New Zealand, alongside other Pacific nations, does not support China using the South Pacific for missile testing.

This series of objections from Australia, Japan, and New Zealand underscores a growing unease regarding China's military behaviour in the Pacific region. The international community continues to closely monitor these developments in light of regional security dynamics.
