Canadian Police Find No Link Between Indian Government and Killing
Canadian law enforcement has stated that investigations into the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar have produced no evidence implicating the Indian government. Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in British Columbia on 18 June 2023, leading to international scrutiny.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) made their comments during a press conference, emphasising that while the case remains open, all evidence collected thus far does not establish any direct link to Indian officials or agents.
Nijjar, a prominent figure within the Sikh community, was known for advocating for a separate Sikh state in India, which has led to contentious relations between New Delhi and certain diaspora groups.
The announcement follows a statement made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who previously asserted that there were credible allegations tying the Indian government to Nijjar’s death. This remark has led to heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India.
The Indian government has firmly rejected these allegations, labelling them as baseless. It has called for a thorough investigation into the killing, asking all parties involved to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims.
Officials from both countries are likely to continue discussions as the situation evolves, with implications for security and international relations at stake. The RCMP noted that it is focused on pursuing all leads as the investigation progresses, but any updates regarding relationships with foreign governments will be approached with caution.
As the investigation unfolds, both the Canadian and Indian governments remain under pressure from their respective constituencies to respond effectively to the ongoing situation. Further discussions between officials are anticipated in the coming weeks, given the complexities surrounding this sensitive case.
