C. Joseph Vijay Appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Designate
C. Joseph Vijay will take oath as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister on May 10, leading a coalition government after securing support from multiple parties.

In a significant political development, C. Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been appointed as the Chief Minister designate of Tamil Nadu. This appointment by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar occurred on May 9, 2026, amidst a politically charged atmosphere in the state.

After a period of uncertainty, C. Joseph Vijay successfully staked his claim to form the government, demonstrating the support of 120 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the 234-member assembly. Vijay's ascension follows days of political negotiations, culminating in his meeting with the Governor where he presented support from coalition partners including the Congress party, which holds five seats in the assembly, as well as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Vijay, who is due to be sworn in at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on May 10, will take office with nine other Ministers. His coalition now has a slight majority, surpassing the required threshold by two seats, a critical factor in the formation of a stable government.

The coalition solidified its position after VCK President Thol. Thirumavalavan and IUML President K.M. Kader Mohideen expressed their unconditional support in letters addressed to the Governor. This coalition marks a historic partnership, with media outlets noting this as the first significant coalition government in Tamil Nadu since 1952.

Outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), called upon the new government to continue implementing the welfare schemes that were initiated during his administration. In a social media comment, Stalin urged that the benefits of these schemes should persist for the welfare of women, youth, and marginalised communities.

The vote of confidence for the new government is scheduled to take place by May 13, 2026. Vijay has previously met the Governor multiple times during the negotiation process, reflecting the complex dynamics of Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

Vijay’s father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, expressed his pride, stating, 'Finally, Tamil people have succeeded.' The expectations are high for the new administration as it prepares to face its first significant challenge: securing the vote of confidence in the assembly.

This development comes as Tamil Nadu continues to navigate a landscape of coalition politics, which has become a prominent feature of its governance in recent times.
