BJP Announces Candidates for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026
On 3 April 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its list of 27 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan, will contest from the Avanashi Assembly segment, continuing his political journey after a previous unsuccessful attempt in the Dharapuram segment during the last elections.
Nainar Nagenthran, the current state president of BJP, is set to run from the Sattur segment in Virudhunagar, departing from his previous constituency in Tirunelveli, where he has been successful in multiple elections. Tamilisai Soundararajan, a former state BJP president and ex-Governor of Telangana, is contesting from Mylapore in Chennai, marking her fourth attempt at an Assembly election in Tamil Nadu.
Vanathi Srinivasan, the BJP Mahila Morcha's national president and current MLA for Coimbatore South, will contest from Coimbatore North this time. S. Vijayadharani, a former Congress member who joined BJP, will run from Vilavancode, a constituency she has previously won.
The list also includes candidates from various constituencies such as M. Rajasimha Mahindra from Avadi and Nagesh Kumar from Thalli, among others. Notably, K. Annamalai, the former state president of BJP and a prominent figure in the party's campaigns, was not featured on the candidate list. Annamalai has recently been sidelined following a change in the party's leadership dynamics, with Nainar Nagenthran succeeding him as state chief.
Despite not running in this election, Annamalai has expressed his continued support for the party and its candidates. He stated on social media, “I, as a Karyakarta, will stand shoulder to shoulder and campaign for all our winning BJP and other NDA candidates, with the aim of the NDA winning 210 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.”
The ground realities of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape indicate a complex battle, with multiple parties including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the AIADMK, who leads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), vying for power. The elections are scheduled to take place in a single phase on 23 April 2026, with results to be counted on 4 May.
The BJP's previous performance in the state has been challenging, with the party only managing to secure four out of the 20 seats it contested during the last Assembly elections in 2021. The party has shifted its strategy this time, focusing on consolidating its alliances and selecting candidates that may appeal to a broader electorate.
As the BJP prepares for the upcoming elections, analysts suggest that the absence of K. Annamalai from the candidate list could reflect a significant shift in the party's strategy in Tamil Nadu. His previous role as a key face of the BJP in the state will be closely watched as the party navigates its future political engagements in the region.
