Bihar Elections: PM Modi Celebrates NDA's Significant Victory
Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads celebrations as his party's alliance secures a decisive win in Bihar's Assembly elections, surpassing 200 seats.

NEW DELHI: Celebrations were in full swing at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in Delhi on Friday, following the party-led National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) substantial victory in the Bihar Assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a spirited entrance, greeted by enthusiastic chants from party supporters. Wearing a traditional gamcha, a type of scarf, he waved to the cheering crowd as he arrived to address party workers.

The NDA achieved a remarkable result, surpassing the 200-seat threshold in the 243-seat Bihar Assembly, while the opposition alliance, known as Mahagathbandhan, struggled to make an impact. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to the voters, emphasising the importance of unity in the state. "Jai Chhathi Maiyya, yeh prachand jeet, atoot vishwas, Bihar ke logo ne bilkul garda uda diya hai," he stated, highlighting the overwhelming support from the electorate.

Election Background

The Bihar elections, conducted on 6 and 11 November, witnessed a record voter turnout of 66.91%, the highest since the state's first elections in 1951, according to the Election Commission of India. Results began to emerge at 08:00 local time, with the NDA quickly establishing a strong lead in nearly 200 constituencies.

Controversy Surrounding the Elections

The elections were marred by controversy surrounding a recent revision of the electoral roll, which opposition parties claimed unfairly excluded genuine voters. However, both the BJP and the Election Commission rejected these allegations. The BJP's main rival in the elections was a coalition comprising the Indian National Congress, the regional Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and smaller parties. Despite the united front, the opposition managed to secure leads in less than 40 seats.

The significant turnout among female voters is being credited as a critical factor in the NDA's success. With nearly half of Bihar's 74 million voters being women, the state recorded its highest female voter turnout at 71.6%. Analysts suggest that welfare schemes implemented by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's administration resonated positively with female constituents, contributing to the NDA's victory.

Future Implications

This election is viewed as a precursor to upcoming state elections in West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, where the BJP has faced challenges in gaining traction. Bihar remains one of the few states where the BJP has yet to establish a government independently.

Notably, this election could potentially be the last featuring seasoned political figures such as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, both of whom have influenced Bihar's political landscape for decades. At 70, both leaders are experiencing health issues, with Yadav currently out on bail following corruption convictions. His son, Tejashwi Yadav, was the chief ministerial candidate for the opposition alliance.

The elections have drawn significant attention, and the implications of the results will be closely monitored as they may set the tone for future political dynamics in India.

As the BJP celebrates this electoral triumph, party leaders have expressed their thanks to the electorate for their overwhelming support, while the opposition has yet to respond to the election outcomes.
