Belgian Chocolate Gift for PM Modi Breaks in Transit

A Belgian chocolate model of India's prominent India Gate was meant as a gift for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi but broke during transit. The Belgian Embassy reported that Prime Minister Bart De Wever is committed to ensuring a complete chocolate replica is delivered to PM Modi in the near future. The ornate creation gained considerable attention online when details were shared by the embassy on the social media platform X.

The embassy recounted that Bart De Wever had intended to gift the sculpture during a visit to India, but unfortunately, it did not survive its journey. "Unfortunately, it broke! But the Prime Minister is determined that it finds its way to PM Modi and India next time,” the embassy stated in its post.

During a joint press conference with PM Modi in New Delhi, De Wever revealed the incident, stating, "I had actually planned to present to Prime Minister Modi a fitting gift, a sculpture of India Gate entirely made out of the best Belgian chocolates.” He humorously noted the chocolate's failure to endure the trip, contrasting it with the enduring structure of the actual India Gate, which has stood for nearly a century.

De Wever added, “Chocolate is excellent for diplomacy, but not excellent for diplomatic travel, we noticed.” He assured that a backup replica exists in Belgium, and pledged, "One way or another, I will get it to Prime Minister Modi in one piece. That’s an ambition I leave India with today.”

The choice of India Gate as a symbol was significant for the diplomatic gesture, as it embodies the shared heritage between India and Belgium. The chocolate version was designed to showcase part of the monument’s inscription that commemorates the Indian soldiers who fought valiantly on Belgian soil during the First World War. "More than a century ago, Indian soldiers travelled thousands of miles to fight on Belgian land, and we have not forgotten this,” De Wever remarked.

He further asserted that the courage and sacrifices of these soldiers remain a vital aspect of the shared history between the two nations, illustrating that peace must consistently be upheld.

The unforeseen mishap has sparked interest in both nations and demonstrates the lighter side of diplomatic relations, highlighting cultural exchanges through culinary art.
