BCCI Implements Restriction on Benched Players During IPL Matches
New BCCI rule restricts access for non-playing IPL team members on match days, enhancing operational control and standardising match environments.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new regulations impacting the movement of players not participating in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Under the revised rules, players who are not among the 16 selected on the team sheet will be prohibited from entering the playing field on match days.

This update aims to enhance operational oversight during matches by preventing benched players from carrying out typical duties, such as delivering drinks or messages to teammates. The regulation applies to various aspects of player and support staff interactions around the field.

According to a recent report by Cricbuzz, teams have been informed that only five players in training bibs will be allowed to remain active near the boundary at any one time during a match. Players from the nominated 16 for that day's match, along with others from the squad, can fill these boundary roles, but the number is strictly capped at five.

In addition, players not included in the match XI or serving as substitute fielders must stay seated in the dugout. They are restricted from moving about between the boundary line and the LED advertising boards surrounding the pitch.

A spokesperson for one of the teams mentioned, "Instructions have been passed to us only recently that all substitutes cannot move around during the match. They are also not allowed to carry drinks onto the field. Only the 16 named in the team for the match can do so. In addition to that, only five outside the playing XI can move around. The others can sit in the dugout but cannot move between the boundary line and LED advertising boards."

This recent change in operational regulations aligns with the BCCI’s efforts to maintain strict control over match-day conduct and enhance the standard of the tournament. Previous adjustments this season include revised protocols for match-day practice, restricting access within training areas, and implementing tighter control measures for support staff.

As part of its ongoing governance of the tournament, the BCCI appears committed to refining the environment surrounding matches, thereby ensuring a more regulated atmosphere for players and officials alike. While these measures may limit flexibility for teams, they contribute to a broader practice of standardisation intended to uphold the integrity of the league.

The move comes as the IPL seeks to maintain high standards across all aspects of the tournament, signalling a decisive shift in how teams operate on match days. Despite the limitations imposed, many teams will adapt to this framework as they continue throughout the competition, demonstrating their ability to comply with the evolving structure of the IPL.

The BCCI's latest regulations reflect a strategic focus on controlling the match dynamics and ensuring all participants adhere to a clear and concise set of guidelines, enhancing the overall professionalism of the league.
