Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns Due to Illness

Mohammed Shahabuddin, the President of Bangladesh, has stepped down from his role due to health complications. The announcement follows a statement released on Friday, where the 76-year-old cited medical issues including Autonomic Neuropathy, a condition causing intermittent episodes of loss of consciousness.

Shahabuddin's resignation comes two years prior to the end of his official five-year term, which was meant to conclude in 2028. In his statement, he expressed that his illness prevented him from adequately performing the duties of his office.

“I am seriously ill… therefore, I am unable to perform my duty of the constitutional post,” Shahabuddin stated in a letter addressed to Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh’s national parliament. Following his resignation, the Speaker is set to assume the presidential responsibilities until a successor is chosen. As per the country's constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days.

The resignation happens amidst growing political pressure from opposition parties demanding his departure. As reported by Dhaka-based The Daily Star, Shahabuddin had recently refuted claims that he had contacted ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently residing in India. However, he confirmed experiencing various health challenges leading to his resignation decision.

Shahabuddin has held the presidency since April 2023. His tenure has been marked by significant political instability following Hasina’s removal from power due to protests in August 2024, until a caretaker government was established shortly thereafter. Hasina, ousted during these protests, is expected to return to Bangladesh in December. Her absence from the political scene leaves Shahabuddin's resignation creating a lack of support for her party in high office just months before her anticipated return.

Although the president has a ceremonial role in Bangladesh’s political system, his exit complicates the already tumultuous environment ahead of the upcoming elections. During his time in office, Shahabuddin navigated a politically sensitive period but now leaves a position that is crucial in maintaining continuity in governance amidst the current political turmoil.
