Bangladesh's Interim Leader Resigns Ahead of New Government

Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader of Bangladesh, announced his resignation in a televised address on Monday, just hours before Tarique Rahman is set to be sworn in as the new Prime Minister. This marks the official conclusion of the caretaker administration that took charge following political turmoil in 2024.

In his farewell speech, Yunus urged the citizens of Bangladesh to protect the democratic freedoms that have emerged during this transition. He stated, "Today, the interim government is stepping down. But let the practice of democracy, freedom of speech, and fundamental rights that has begun not be halted," as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The resignation comes after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, achieved a significant victory in the 13th Parliamentary elections, securing more than two-thirds of the parliamentary seats. This decisive win prepares Rahman to take office and form a new government in Dhaka, a city that is home to approximately 170 million people.

The BNP emerged as the ruling faction in the elections held on February 12, with Rahman leading an alliance that claimed a commanding mandate. The Jamaat-e-Islami party has emerged as the principal opposition group following this election.

Newly elected lawmakers are scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday. Rahman is expected to formally assume the role of Prime Minister, with the announcement of his cabinet anticipated shortly thereafter. Reports suggest that the cabinet will feature a mix of experienced and younger members.

Yunus congratulated Rahman on his party's success, calling the election a pivotal moment for Bangladesh's democratic framework. He remarked, "The people, voters, political parties, and stakeholder institutions linked to the election have set a commendable example. This election has set a benchmark for future elections."

Yunus, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, took on the interim leadership role in August 2024 after a student-led uprising resulted in the ousting of Sheikh Hasina, who had ruled for 15 years. Initially hesitant to engage in politics, Yunus accepted the position to oversee a stable transition and election preparation amidst the national crisis.

Reflecting on the events that led to his government, he described the uprising as "a day of great liberation," adding, "What a day of joy it was! Bangladeshis across the world shed tears of happiness. The youth of our country freed it from the grip of a demon."
