Bandar Struggles at the Box Office After Opening Week
Anurag Kashyap's film Bandar, featuring Bobby Deol, has not shown growth, concluding its first week with low box office earnings.

Bandar, the latest film directed by Anurag Kashyap and starring Bobby Deol, was released in theatres on June 5. This collaboration marks the first time that Kashyap and Deol have worked together. Despite fresh teamwork, the film is experiencing challenges at the box office. Although it received positive reviews, audience numbers have not reflected this acclaim.

As a serious legal drama, Bandar has struggled to draw crowds during its first week in cinemas. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, on its seventh day of screening, the film was showcased in approximately 820 shows across India. Unfortunately, the film suffered its poorest performance on the sixth day, collecting just ₹20 lakh.

The film debuted with an opening day collection of ₹50 lakh. Although it saw some positive momentum over the weekend, with earnings climbing to ₹95 lakh on Saturday and reaching a peak of ₹1 crore on Sunday, the ticket sales entered a downward trend with the start of the workweek. On Monday and Tuesday, Bandar managed to gather ₹45 lakh each day, before dropping sharply on Wednesday. After a week of being screened, the total collection stands at an estimated ₹3.60 crore net.

Competition is fierce for Bandar, as it must vie for screen space with two other significant domestic releases, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona and Peddi. Additionally, several major international films are currently in theatres, further limiting available slots for screenings. Reports prior to the movie's release indicated that the film’s team faced considerable difficulty negotiating with major multiplexes like PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis for screen time.

The narrative of Bandar is inspired by real events, following the story of Samar (played by Bobby Deol), a fading singer-actor. His life is turned upside down when a woman named Gayatri (played by Sapna Pabbi) accuses him of rape. Although Samar insists that their interaction was consensual, he finds himself entangled in a high-profile legal struggle. As public perception and media coverage deteriorate, both his career and personal life are left in disarray. The film closely examines themes such as public opinion, media trials, and accountability within the judicial system.

Alongside Bobby Deol, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad, Raj B. Shetty, and Indrajith Sukumaran in prominent roles. The combination of a compelling premise and a talented cast has not, however, translated into box office success for this new release.
