Baloch Liberation Army Releases Video of Captured Pakistani Soldiers
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant organisation, has released a video claiming to show seven Pakistani Army personnel it says they captured recently. This release comes amidst reports that the Pakistani military has denied the assembly's allegations, asserting that no soldiers are unaccounted for or in militant detention. The footage features the alleged soldiers kneeling on rugged terrain, flanked by armed captors, and escalates tension ahead of a February 22 deadline for a proposed prisoner swap. The BLA has issued a stark warning, stating that the detainees face potential execution if negotiations do not occur before the deadline.
In contrast to the BLA's assertions, military officials in Pakistan have maintained that none of their personnel are missing, a claim that stands in direct opposition to the circulating video evidence. The individuals shown in the footage displayed their military identification cards and national identity documents, attesting to their formal recruitment and deployment within the army. Reports earlier indicated that the BLA captured seven soldiers last week; however, the recent video shows eight individuals in captivity.
One soldier, visibly distressed, questioned the military's denial of their status, asking tearfully, 'How can the army say that we are not their personnel?' The group of detainees appealed directly to the military leadership and government representatives of Pakistan, urging them to engage in discussions regarding a prisoner exchange involving Baloch detainees. They implored authorities to negotiate terms that would allow their safe return.
The BLA, operating through its media branch called Hakkal, reiterated that with only three days remaining in their seven-day ultimatum, immediate negotiations must commence. If discussions do not begin by the deadline, they have indicated that execution of the prisoners could be a consequence.
As of the latest reports, there has been no new official response from the Pakistani military or government regarding the recent video release. The BLA’s stated objective is independence for Balochistan, a region in southwestern Pakistan, which shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran. It is the largest of the various ethnic militant groups that have long been in conflict with the federal authorities, accusing the Pakistani government of exploiting Balochistan's abundant natural resources without fair compensation. Islamabad persistently refutes these allegations and classifies the BLA as a terrorist organisation.
