Arun Govil Discusses Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana Challenges
Actor Arun Govil, widely recognised for his role as Lord Rama in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic television series 'Ramayan', has commented on the challenges faced by Ranbir Kapoor in portraying the same character in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film 'Ramayana'. Govil, who will be appearing in the new film as King Dasharath, highlighted that the first reaction to Kapoor's portrayal has been significantly influenced by the enduring impact of his own performance.
In an interview with Variety India, Govil mentioned that his version of Lord Rama has become a standard for many viewers. He stated, “Nobody wants to see another Rama,” referring to the deep emotional connections people still have with the character as he was portrayed in the 1987 series. Govil elaborated on this lasting legacy, noting that his depiction continues to resonate in various regions of North and Central India, where images of Rama frequently sold at fairs and festivals still bear his likeness.
Due to this strong emotional link, Govil felt it was inappropriate to comment on another actor's interpretation of the character. He shared that he initially hesitated to take on the role of King Dasharath but was persuaded by Tiwari, who indicated a desire to link the new film with the classic series. “Had I felt it wasn’t right, I would not have done it. To be honest, initially, I didn’t want to do this role. But Nitesh Tiwari was insistent,” he explained.
While he refrained from making any judgements about Ranbir Kapoor's performance before the film's release, Govil acknowledged, “As Rama, I won’t be able to tell you anything about him, but he is a good actor, there is no doubt about that. He is also a fine human being.” He expressed that every actor brings their unique interpretation to a character, suggesting that Kapoor must have approached the role in his distinct style.
The film has generated significant buzz as one of the most anticipated releases of the year. In addition to Ranbir Kapoor, it features a robust cast including Sai Pallavi, Yash, Sunny Deol, and Ravie Dubey. Director Nitesh Tiwari has previously remarked on the project, saying that adapting the revered tale of the Ramayana entails “a lot of moral responsibility.”
Producer Namit Malhotra has recently shared a clip of the discussion surrounding the film, further garnering attention online. 'Ramayana' is set to be released during Diwali 2026, and audiences are keenly waiting to see how this interpretation will unfold.
