Arrest of Former AAP Minister in Punjab Official's Death Sparks Debate
The arrest of former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar in connection with the death of a Punjab State Warehousing Corporation official has ignited significant political discourse in Punjab. Bhullar was taken into custody on 23 March 2026 in Mandi Gobindgarh, following the alleged suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, who was the district manager of the corporation.
Reports indicate that Randhawa consumed a poisonous substance the previous week, which was captured in a video where he accused Bhullar of pressuring him to assign a tender to Bhullarâs aide. This incident has raised serious allegations of harassment.
The arrest comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of the AAP government, with opposition parties framing it as a necessary response to pressure applied through their ongoing criticisms. Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa from the Indian National Congress highlighted that the governmentâs actions were prompted only after he and other Congress members raised the issue in Parliament, calling for accountability. Furthermore, there have been assertions that Union Home Minister Amit Shah suggested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry if MPs jointly requested it.
In contrast, the AAP leadership claimed credit for Bhullar's arrest, asserting their commitment to justice and transparency. AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal remarked that swift action was taken against Bhullar following serious allegations, positioning the party as fearless in holding its officials accountable.
Protests erupted across Punjab, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), calling for a full investigation by the CBI. BJP State President Sunil Jakhar contended that the AAP government was apprehensive about such an inquiry because it could expose deeper issues involving its leadership.
Bikram Singh Majithia of the SAD called for an independent autopsy of Randhawa to ensure fairness in the investigation. Amid the political back-and-forth, Bhullar expressed through social media that he was voluntarily surrendering to the authorities, emphasizing his confidence in the judicial system and denouncing reports that suggested he had evaded arrest.
The Punjab Police have charged Bhullar, along with his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar and personal assistant Dilbag Singh, under various sections related to abetting suicide. The evolving situation continues to draw attention to the integrity of governance in Punjab and the degree of accountability expected from public officials.
