Apple Inc. is preparing to introduce its first-ever pair of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven smart glasses in 2027. These innovative eyewear products will incorporate Visual Intelligence technology and aim to bring the functionality of Siri into users' everyday environments.

Unlike many of its competitors, Apple has opted not to partner with existing eyewear manufacturers for this venture. Instead, the company is developing the glasses internally and has plans for a range of styles.

Features of the Smart Glasses The upcoming device will be primarily AI-based, as opposed to augmented reality (AR)-powered. It will function predominantly with voice and camera inputs and will not include traditional displays. This enables users to engage with Siri, who can interact with the surrounding environment, answer questions, and provide contextual information. Additionally, the glasses will allow users to request Siri to save images for future reference.

Audio Capabilities The smart glasses will include built-in speakers designed for music playback, functioning similarly to open-ear headphones. However, they are expected to lack the capability for regular photo and video recording, a decision influenced by recent privacy concerns linked to other similar technologies, notably Meta's Ray-Ban glasses.

Design Options Apple is reported to be working on several design variations for the smart glasses. Potential styles include a larger rectangular frame akin to Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a sleeker rectangular design reminiscent of those worn by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and larger oval or circular frames. There may also be a more compact oval or circular design option. The glasses are set to be made from acetate, a durable and premium material that offers a sturdier alternative to conventional plastic.
