Apple Plans Replacement for Faulty iPhone Duo Screens
Apple has confirmed it will replace iPhone Duo smartphones that exhibit screen problems just days after the eagerly awaited foldable device was released. Starting at £1,999 ($2,668) in the United Kingdom, the iPhone Duo's launch attracted significant attention at Apple stores worldwide, but a small number of users have reported issues.
Images shared on social media have shown lines appearing on the screen of the device, which is Apple's first foldable smartphone. The company acknowledged these reports, noting that it is aware of 'an issue impacting the inner display on a small number' of handsets and has encouraged affected customers to seek replacements.
Users have expressed their concerns about cracks forming along the central crease of the device's screen. Reports also include a crunching sound heard when the device is opened. One user, Justin Lokos, posted a picture of his Duo displaying lines on the right side and later thanked an Apple store in New York for the replacement he received.
While the exact number of affected devices remains unclear, some images of faulty screens may have been generated using artificial intelligence. It is crucial to note that the Duo's 7.6-inch inner display is supported by a central hinge, which has historically faced challenges similar to those seen in rival foldable products.
In 2019, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold encountered serious issues with screen breakages shortly after its launch, highlighting the complexities involved in designing foldable devices. Currently, users of Android have several foldable options, while Apple has entered this burgeoning market with its latest release, which is the company's most expensive iPhone to date.
The iPhone Duo represents the most significant redesign of the iPhone in nearly two decades, a move led by the new Chief Executive Officer, John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook in September. When the iPhone Duo was unveiled, Ternus asserted that it would 'redefine the experience of using a foldable phone,' differentiating it from existing models that he described as 'two phones awkwardly stuck together.'
In addition to quality concerns, a recent teardown by iFixit has provided insights into the possible causes of the screen faults. The group highlighted the hinge design as critical to the issue, suggesting that it may not adequately support the screen during operation, potentially leading to stress points where damage can occur.
Despite being rated IP68 for dust resistance, iFixit cautioned that fine particles could still infiltrate the hinge mechanism, potentially causing wear and eventual damage. The teardown resulted in a repairability score of 5 out of 10 for the iPhone Duo, indicating that while some components can be replaced with relative ease, the screen and hinge represent significant challenges.
Apple is expected to leverage customer feedback regarding the Duo's issues as it continues to navigate the competitive foldable smartphone market. The company's approach to managing these complaints will play a key role in shaping consumer perceptions moving forward.
