Apple Introduces Overhauled Siri to Compete in AI Landscape
Apple reveals substantial updates to Siri, aiming to enhance its capabilities in the competitive artificial intelligence market.

Apple announced a significant upgrade to its Siri voice assistant during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) held in Cupertino, California. This long-awaited revamp, termed "Siri AI," aims to strengthen Apple's position in the growing artificial intelligence sector, where competitors such as OpenAI and Google have made great strides.

The improvements include a more conversational format, a separate application for users, and an enhanced ability to interpret screen content and gather information from the internet. This announcement comes two years after Apple initially promised a major overhaul for Siri, which has experienced delays.

One key feature of the new Siri AI is the capability for users to review past interactions. The assistant can also identify details—such as addresses—in messages even if they have not been previously stored. This marks Apple's most extensive effort to rejuvenate Siri, which has struggled to stay relevant amid advancements made by other AI models, including OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief, remarked during his keynote that some companies seem to be hurrying into AI development without adequately considering user needs. He highlighted Apple's distinct philosophy: focusing on practical applications rather than aiming for fully autonomous AI agents.

Bob O’Donnell, president and chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research, stated, "This finally delivers on the promise of Siri from 15 years ago. It’s AI for the masses; it’s not really agentic." He suggested that the level of intelligence provided by Siri is what many users desire.

Market reactions to the announcement were subdued, with MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett noting that while the updates were not groundbreaking, they could position Siri as a credible chatbot.

As part of its AI strategy, Apple has collaborated with partners, utilising Google’s Gemini technology for some of its models. The company also indicated that larger models would operate on cloud infrastructure powered by Nvidia chips. Apple reassured users that their personal data would remain confidential, as most data handling occurs directly on devices rather than in the cloud.

However, the ability for Siri AI to observe screen activity introduces a conflict between convenience and privacy, according to analyst Paolo Pescatore of PP Foresight. He cautioned that Apple faces the challenge of ensuring customers understand that enhanced intelligence does not necessitate privacy compromises.

Siri AI will facilitate searches through messages and emails, offering real-time responses based on visible content. The information and images generated by this updated feature will be stored in a new standalone application that will sync across Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

In addition to the improvements for Siri, Apple revealed smaller updates, including child safety measures that allow parents to monitor their children’s app usage and online interactions. Additional features in the Safari browser involve enhanced image processing and tracking stock availability.

Notably, due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) within the European Union, Siri AI will not be accessible on iPhones or iPads in the EU at launch, nor in China, while Apple addresses regulatory concerns.
