Apple Collaborates with Google to Enhance Siri Using AI Model

Apple Inc. is reportedly set to enhance its Siri voice assistant by integrating a sophisticated artificial intelligence model developed by Alphabet Inc.'s Google. According to a report from Bloomberg News, the tech giant is in the final stages of negotiating a deal that would entail an annual payment of approximately $1 billion for access to Google's AI technology.

The model in question, known as Gemini, boasts an impressive 1.2 trillion parameters. This complexity significantly surpasses the capabilities of Apple's existing systems, which have faced criticism for being less adept than competing voice assistants such as Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant. Siri has historically struggled with handling intricate, multi-step requests and integrating seamlessly with third-party applications.

While the specifics of the partnership are still being finalised, the deal is designed to serve as a temporary solution for Apple until its own AI systems are fully operational. Bloomberg's report indicates that the collaboration is distinct from prior discussions regarding the potential integration of Gemini directly into Siri as a chatbot feature. Furthermore, this arrangement will not involve Google’s AI search functionalities being incorporated into Apple's operating systems.

Apple has faced challenges in advancing its AI capabilities, with the company previously announcing delays to improvements for Siri, now expected to roll out in 2026. The specific reasons for these postponements have not been disclosed. In contrast, competitors have rapidly adopted AI enhancements for their voice assistants; Google integrated its Gemini model into its assistant last year, while Amazon has initiated an AI-driven overhaul of its Alexa assistant in 2023.

As part of its strategy to bolster its AI initiatives, Apple has reorganised its executive team, appointing Mike Rockwell to lead the Siri project. This change comes after reports suggested that Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook had lost confidence in the ability of John Giannandrea, head of AI, to push forward product development effectively.

In light of these developments, the tech industry is watching closely as Apple seeks to revitalise Siri and close the gap with its rivals.
