Apple CarPlay to Integrate External AI Chatbots Including ChatGPT
Apple Inc. is reportedly planning to integrate external voice-controlled artificial intelligence applications into its CarPlay system, a significant shift in the company’s approach to in-car voice interaction. According to a report by Bloomberg News, this development will enable users to interact with AI chatbots from various providers, including OpenAI and Google, for the first time through the vehicle's interface.
Historically, Apple CarPlay users have been restricted to using Apple's own voice assistant, Siri, for voice-controlled tasks. This change is aimed at broadening the functionality of CarPlay, allowing third-party applications to be more easily accessed and used while driving. The report indicates that developers will be able to create CarPlay-compatible versions of their apps that trigger voice modes automatically when opened.
Though this new feature enhances user functionality, it comes with certain limitations. Users will still not be able to modify the CarPlay interface to replace the existing Siri button or change the wake word used to activate the assistant. Instead, to use third-party AI, users will need to open the respective app manually.
The integration is expected to roll out in the coming month, giving developers a limited window to prepare their applications for this new capability. This strategic move aligns with Apple’s ongoing efforts to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, particularly as the demand for AI-driven solutions grows within the automotive sector.
Although Apple has declined to officially comment on these plans, this expansion of CarPlay is anticipated to attract more developers and users to the platform, ultimately enhancing the user experience for drivers seeking diverse voice-controlled services while on the road.
