Apoorva Makhija Discusses Mental Health During Controversy
Apoorva Makhija, a prominent content creator, has opened up about her significant mental health challenges during the backlash surrounding the YouTube series 'India's Got Latent'. Speaking on the reality show 'Lock Upp Season 2', Makhija revealed that she struggled with suicidal thoughts during this tumultuous period. She acknowledged fellow influencer Sufi Motiwala for providing critical support when she needed it the most.
During an emotional exchange on the show, Apoorva recalled the fallout from the 'India's Got Latent' controversy, which had stirred public outrage due to allegedly offensive remarks made in the series. This led to widespread social media trolling and several police complaints against her and the other production members. Reflecting on her struggles, she stated, "I would’ve killed myself if, at the time of the Latent fiasco, I hadn’t had Sufi."
Sufi Motiwala, during the conversation, urged her not to make such statements. He expressed profound feelings about their friendship, saying, "That one year was my most favourite year of my life when we were friends. I finally felt like I had a social circle in Bombay."
Apoorva further elaborated on Sufi's impact during that difficult time, stating, "I wouldn’t have been able to get through that. You were the only person with me. I wasn’t dating anyone. Personally, in my life, as a friend, I have always given you credit. You saved my life; I genuinely wouldn't have been able to survive Latent if it wasn't for you."
The duo had initially developed a close friendship while participating in another Karan Johar show, 'The Traitors'. However, a public fallout later strained their relationship. Sufi had distanced himself from Apoorva for personal reasons, stating he wished to be friends with her rather than being identified merely for the controversies they faced together.
In a moment of reconciliation on 'Lock Upp', they each apologised to one another, with Apoorva acknowledging her past shortcomings in providing emotional support. The conversation highlighted the importance of friendships and support systems during challenging times, particularly in the realm of social media.
Last year, Apoorva faced backlash following her participatory role in 'India's Got Latent', a comedy show hosted by influencer Samay Raina. The series garnered negative attention over statements made by various participants, leading to serious consequences for them, including threats and accusations on social media.
Apoorva’s candid discussion serves as a reminder of the often-hidden struggles faced by public figures in the digital age and underscores the vital nature of mental health support amidst personal and professional turmoil.
