Amit Shah Responds to Rahul Gandhi's Claims on Voter Deletions
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has responded to claims made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding alleged voter deletions in India. During a recent event, Shah asserted that there are no records of three crore supposed Bangladeshi infiltrators on the electoral rolls.
The remarks come in the context of an ongoing controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which aims to ensure that eligible voters are accurately included. Shah invited Gandhi to engage in a public debate on this matter, asserting, "The government is ready to convene a special session of Parliament to address these issues."
Amit Shah's statement was made while addressing a public rally in Hyderabad, where he emphasised the government's commitment to democracy and transparency in electoral processes. He highlighted that the calls for change need to be based on verified information rather than unsubstantiated claims.
Shah's remarks were promptly countered by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud. Goud questioned the BJP's commitment to democratic principles when faced with allegations of voter deletions. He stated that the Election Commission has a critical role in ensuring that no eligible voters are excluded during the SIR exercise.
Goud remarked, “If the BJP genuinely believes in democracy, it should respond to the questions raised by the Congress instead of attacking us for raising concerns about electoral irregularities.” He accused the BJP-led government of failing to fulfil commitments made during the formation of Telangana, particularly pertaining to funds and development.
Further, Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also challenged Shah to disclose details about the electoral roll revisions, questioning the efficacy of the process. He alleged that forms for voter deletions were being circulated from BJP offices and demanded a parliamentary discussion on the matter.
Prabhakar emphasised that while the party supports the removal of ineligible voters, particularly from minority and disadvantaged communities, it won’t accept removal based on questionable criteria.
This exchange exemplifies the heightened political tensions as various parties prepare for the upcoming elections. Critics argue that transparency and accountability in electoral processes are crucial for maintaining public trust.
With responses from both Shah and Congress leaders, this debate encapsulates the larger narrative of democracy, voter representation, and political accountability that many citizens are keen to understand better.
