Amit Shah Presents Lok Sabha Seat Breakdown After Delimitation
Amit Shah outlines updated Lok Sabha seats post-delimitation, addressing Southern states' concerns about representation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah provided insights on the recent delimitation exercise that recounts the distribution of Lok Sabha seats among Indian states. In a speech delivered in the Lok Sabha, he clarified that seats would be allocated in proportion to the current configuration to address concerns from Southern states regarding their representation following the population growth criteria.

Shah addressed criticisms from opposition parties, which argued that Northern states would benefit disproportionately from this exercise. The delimitation process proposes an increase in Lok Sabha seats from the existing total of 543 to 850. Moreover, the initiative aims to improve women's representation, ensuring that one-third of the seats will be reserved for women.

Elaborating on the changes, Shah outlined the anticipated shifts in seat distribution for several states. He indicated that Karnataka's representation will rise from 28 to 42 Lok Sabha seats, maintaining its percentage of representatives in the House at around 5.14% to 5.15%.

“Andhra Pradesh will see an increase in its seats from 25 to 38, while its representation will evolve from 4.60% to 4.65%,” Shah explained. Likewise, he discussed Telangana's situation, where seat numbers would grow from 17 to 26, resulting in a slight increase in representation from 3.13% to 3.18%.

Regarding Tamil Nadu, he reassured constituents that not only would they retain their influence, but it would grow. Shah stated, “39 MPs are elected from Tamil Nadu and in the House of 543 members, the representation is 7.18%. After the increase, the strength of MPs would be raised to 59, thereby enhancing their representation in the House of 816 members to 7.23%.”

In total, there will be an increase from 129 to 195 seats across the five Southern states, raising the proportional representation from 23.76% to 23.87%.

This announcement followed Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal's comments earlier in the day, which indicated that all states would benefit from a 50% increase in seats after the delimitation process. Meghwal emphasised that this adjustment was a straightforward method to ensure no state would be left at a disadvantage due to demographic changes: “Seats of all states will be increased by 50%. The total Lok Sabha will amount to 815, with 272 seats reserved for women,” he stated.

However, the proposed delineation raises concerns among certain Southern states, which worry that states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh will see enhanced representation. Critics argue that this will create an imbalance in political power, perpetuating regional disparities.

The delimitation process is expected to predominantly use the 2011 Census data as its foundation. Additionally, new provisions are to be implemented, operationalising the long-anticipated women’s reservation in Parliament, which was approved in 2023.

The upcoming changes remain the subject of heated discussion, particularly among state leaders and opposition parties who express dissatisfaction with the proposed distributions. Amit Shah's clarifications come during a contentious period in Indian politics, where demographics and representation are paramount in shaping the electoral landscape.
