Amazon Invests $5 Billion in Anthropic Amid Cloud Computing Deal
Amazon increases investment in Anthropic to $13 billion, with a commitment of over $100 billion on cloud services over the next decade.

Amazon has announced a significant expansion of its collaboration with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup. The online retail giant will invest an additional $5 billion in Anthropic, raising its total investment in the company to $13 billion. This new agreement includes a pledge from Anthropic to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) within the next decade. The arrangement aims to secure substantial computing power—up to 5 gigawatts—to support the training and operation of Anthropic's AI model, Claude.

This partnership mirrors Amazon's recent strategic move with OpenAI, where it contributed $50 billion to a funding round that valued the ChatGPT developer at $730 billion. Similar to the OpenAI agreement, the deal with Anthropic includes provisions for cloud infrastructure services rather than merely a cash infusion.

Central to this collaboration is Amazon's development of custom chips designed specifically for AI tasks. These chips include Graviton, a low-power central processing unit, and Trainium, which is positioned as a competitor to Nvidia's offerings. Through this deal, Anthropic will be acquiring access to Trainium chip models from Trainium2 to Trainium4, although the latest model, Trainium4, is not yet available. As of December 2025, Trainium3, the most recent chip model, was launched. Anthropic has also secured the option to procure additional capacity on Amazon's future chip developments as they are released.

The deal signals a strategic move in the competitive landscape of AI and cloud computing. Industry observers speculate that this could lead to Anthropic announcing yet another funding round, with indications that venture capitalists are valuing the company at $800 billion or higher.

This expansion highlights Amazon's growing footprint in the AI sector, further solidifying its position through crucial partnerships with leading AI companies. As both firms continue to advance their technologies, the collaboration is poised to have a significant impact on the development and application of artificial intelligence in the coming years.
