Imran Khan faces expulsion from India after joining electoral reform protests in Mumbai, prompting legal challenges from his representatives.

Indian authorities have instructed actor Imran Khan to exit the country by 28 October after he took part in a protest advocating for electoral reforms. Khan, who is the nephew of noted Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and an American citizen, possesses an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. This card grants individuals of Indian heritage the right to visit and reside in India but does not provide voting or election candidacy rights.

The protest, held at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan, aimed to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Local police stated that Khan had violated regulations by participating in the demonstration. In response to the expulsion notice from the Foreigners' Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Khan's lawyer indicated plans to legally contest the order in the Bombay High Court.

According to police, Khan's involvement in the protest led to claims of unlawfulness, stating, "Imran Khan had participated in the agitation despite not being an Indian citizen." The protest was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a recent movement driven by younger generations that has conducted numerous demonstrations calling for transparency in electoral processes.

The Press Trust of India reported the actor's plea against the notice, labelling it as "drastic." Khan's lawyer countered the police's position, asserting that no laws prevent an OCI cardholder from engaging in protest activities.

Imran Khan is famous for his role in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, which released in 2008. He has also appeared in prominent films since his debut as a child actor in the late 1980s and early 1990s, such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.

After a hiatus from acting lasting over a decade, Khan is set to return this year with the Netflix movie Adhure Hum Adhure Tum. His recent protest engagement coincided with rising tensions in Indian politics, especially surrounding allegations of electoral fraud by the election commission, which the agency has denied.

The charges against Khan were brought forth by Kirit Somaiya, an influential member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who accused Khan of attempting to destabilise the order in India. Although Khan did not directly respond to Somaiya's assertions, he shared his views with journalists. "I don't have demands. I'm here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I'm here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted, why people's voices are being suppressed," he said, indicating his intent to participate not as a representative of any organisation.

In the wake of the protest, he was briefly detained along with other demonstrators. Khan later posted a light-hearted image of himself inside a police van on social media, which garnered considerable engagement.

Demonstrations have spread across major cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, with citizens protesting against the election commission and calling for leadership changes in light of upcoming state elections. On 10 October, thousands participated in a march in New Delhi, led by prominent opposition figures, including Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, two key leaders of the CJP faced prison time after allegedly breaching a protest site in the city.

The CJP has announced further protests planned for the coming days, reflecting a movement determined to amplify youth voices and address concerns regarding democratic processes as India approaches crucial electoral events.
