Aakash Chopra Criticises Online Abuse Following Kohli-Head Incident
Aakash Chopra condemns online harassment aimed at families after Virat Kohli and Travis Head's altercation, calling it shameful.

Aakash Chopra, former Indian cricketer and prominent commentator, has voiced his strong disapproval of the online harassment directed at the families of players following a recent incident between Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and Australian batsman Travis Head during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The unfortunate fallout has highlighted a distressing trend of trolling within the cricket community.

The incident occurred during a match when Kohli and Head exchanged words on the pitch, which led to a handshake controversy. Following this, Jessica, Head's wife, was subjected to abusive comments from some Indian social media users, prompting Chopra's vehement response against such behaviour.

Chopra stated, "This behaviour is not solely confined to Indian followers; it reflects a broader issue globally. However, that does not excuse or normalise such actions. We must speak out against these trolls."

He emphasised that athletes, including foreign players like Head, are not just mercenaries in a lucrative league. They contribute significantly to the sport and deserve respect. He made a pointed observation that the mindset of some fans appears to suggest that the payments made to these foreign stars grant them a license to demean them, an attitude Chopra categorically disagrees with.

Chopra reminded fans of the contributions by players such as Jofra Archer, who have played pivotal roles in their teams’ successes, urging the public to remember that sporting events should be about respect and honour. "These players aren't here just to be insulted; they enhance the league with their talents," he asserted.

The exchange between Kohli and Head began during the match where Kohli mocked Head for not substituting in a particular situation, to which Head retorted upon Kohli's dismissal. This argument seemed to have spiralled out of control, leading to unwarranted abuse towards Head’s family after the match.

Reflecting on past incidents, Chopra recalled how Kohli faced similar trolling after India's defeat against Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup, indicating a troubling pattern within the cricketing community. He stressed the importance of accountability, stating that cricketers should leverage their platforms and follower bases to promote positive behaviour and discourage attacks on players' families.

Chopra called upon Indian cricketers to take a more active role in fostering respectful interaction among fans, suggesting that social media could be a powerful tool in shaping behaviour. He argued, "If players used their influential statuses to speak out against trolling, it could produce significant change, even if just a little at a time."

This conversation about online trolling represents a microcosm of larger societal issues related to conduct and respect in sports. With the sport's immense popularity, the call for civility and respect continues to grow, highlighting the need for a change in mentality among some fans in the cricketing world.
