7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Claiming 16 Lives
A powerful earthquake in Tibet has resulted in at least 16 fatalities and many injuries, prompting emergency rescue efforts in the region.

A significant earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, has impacted Baqên County in the Nagqu region of Tibet, resulting in at least 16 fatalities. The quake occurred on Thursday evening, as reported by the Chinese state broadcaster Xinhua, which cited information from local emergency management authorities.

Baqên County is situated about 400 kilometres northeast of Lhasa, the administrative capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, which has been under Chinese jurisdiction since the 1950s. Following the quake, the local government has declared a state of emergency and mobilised rescue teams to assist in the affected areas.

Authorities reported that 46 individuals have sustained injuries and power has been disrupted in numerous communities. Approximately 339 homes have reportedly collapsed due to the tremors, leading to significant damage in the region. Compounding the effects of the earthquake, landslides have caused road closures, hindering access to remote, high-altitude areas where assistance is critically needed.

Residents in nearby cities, including Qamdo and Nyingchi, also experienced strong tremors. Videos circulating on social media depict frantic villagers fleeing into the streets as buildings shudder during the earthquake, though these videos have not been independently verified.

The region is frequently subjected to seismic disturbances. Earlier this year, a 6.2 magnitude quake in the adjacent Gansu province resulted in over 120 deaths. Additionally, Tibet and neighbouring Nepal have recently faced disastrous flooding and landslides, triggered by a glacier collapse, leading to at least 1,400 casualties, with hundreds still reported missing.

Tibet, known for its long-standing calls for greater autonomy, remains one of the most tightly monitored regions in China. With foreign media largely restricted, updates on such disasters are primarily disseminated through Chinese state-run outlets, ensuring that information flow is often censored.

As rescue operations continue, local authorities are working to secure the area and provide aid to those affected by this devastating event.
