Pawan Kalyan's Film 'OG' Nears Rs 150 Crore Amid Mixed Reviews

The Telugu action drama film, 'OG', directed by Sujeeth, has achieved a notable milestone by nearing ₹150 crore in box office collections within just five days of its release. The film, which stars Pawan Kalyan as a gangster named Ojas Gambheera, premiered on September 24, 2023, with its wide theatrical release following on September 25. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film has demonstrated considerable box office strength, particularly during its opening weekend.

The film has garnered a substantial ₹147.65 crore in domestic collections, with an estimated ₹7.45 crore earned on Monday following a robust opening weekend. During this weekend, 'OG' collected ₹63.75 crore on its opening day, benefitting from high ticket prices that ranged from ₹800 to ₹1,000 in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

A significant portion of the opening weekend earnings came from advance ticket sales for the premieres, which brought in ₹21 crore. After an opening day boom, the film experienced a decrease in earnings as expected during weekday screenings, recording a dip of around 71% in collections from Friday to Monday.

Ticket prices in these regions have surged due to market demand, which some industry experts believe may necessitate reductions to drive back regular audiences. “Distributors will likely need to reassess pricing to maintain ticket sales,” noted one exhibitor who chose to remain unnamed. Such pricing strategies do not only reflect the film’s current performance but also its potential longevity at the box office.

'OG' has attracted a strong audience due to Pawan Kalyan's star power; however, critics have noted that the film's storyline leans heavily on action sequences rather than an emotional narrative. This reliance on action could constrain its potential for sustained box office success.

The film was produced with a budget of ₹145 crore, specifically focusing on markets such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where the film has seen significant interest. Nizam, one of the lucrative markets, accounts for ₹50 crore of the film's projected revenue. According to reports from industry tracker Sacnilk, the upcoming week, coinciding with the Dasara festival, may present an opportunity for 'OG' to recover its investments and enhance its overall performance.

In a noteworthy cultural nod, Ram Charan, Pawan Kalyan's nephew and a prominent actor in his own right, attended a special screening of the film, which may further amplify public interest.

Prior to the release, Pawan Kalyan experienced health issues including a viral fever and bronchitis, which had raised concerns regarding his participation in promotional activities. However, following a recovery period, he appeared at the screening, suggesting a positive turning of events for both him and the film's promotion.
