Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer owned by Elon Musk, has officially launched its first Supercharger station in India, located at the One BKC in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex. This development follows the company's recent entry into the Indian market with the introduction of its Model Y. The Supercharger station adds a crucial component to Tesla's infrastructure in the country, aimed at facilitating electric vehicle usage.Details of the Charging Station The newly opened Tesla Charging Station features a total of eight charging stalls: four V4 Supercharging stalls, which are direct current (DC) chargers, and four Destination Charging stalls, which are alternating current (AC) chargers. The Supercharging stalls provide a maximum charging speed of 250 kilowatts (kW) and are priced at ₹24 per kW, while the Destination Charging stalls offer 11 kW for ₹14 per kW. For Tesla customers, the availability of the Superchargers can be easily checked through the Tesla mobile application. This app provides essential information, including battery levels, charging status, and progress updates for users. Charging Capabilities The Supercharging units are designed to provide significant range to Tesla vehicles. For instance, the Tesla Model Y, which offers both rear-wheel drive and long-range variants, can achieve a range of up to 267 kilometres with just 15 minutes of charging at the Superchargers. The estimated cost for a full charge is around ₹1,500, considering the vehicle's battery capacity. Model Y Specifications The Tesla Model Y, available in India, has two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and the Long-Range RWD. The RWD model is fitted with a single electric motor capable of generating approximately 295 horsepower. The 60 kWh battery provides a range of 500 kilometres on a single charge, while the Long-Range version boasts an impressive mileage of 622 kilometres. The starting price for the RWD variant is ₹59.89 lakh, while the Long-Range variant begins at ₹67.89 lakh.Future Plans Tesla's entry into India marks a significant point for the electric vehicle market in the country. The company has plans to expand its charging infrastructure further, with three additional charging facilities expected to open in locations such as Lower Parel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai by the end of September 2025. Elon Musk has previously pointed to India's high import tariffs as a barrier to entering the market, but the launch of the Model Y and Supercharger station signifies a new chapter for Tesla in the region. Deliveries for the Model Y are expected to commence later this year, bringing a new wave of sustainable transportation options to Indian consumers. Tesla continues to emphasise the importance of increasing charging accessibility to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to reducing carbon emissions. As electric vehicle technology advances and infrastructure grows, Tesla aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation in India.
