Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pay tribute to esteemed actor B Saroja Devi after her death at 87.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his condolences following the death of acclaimed actress B Saroja Devi, who passed away at the age of 87. The veteran performer, celebrated for her extensive contributions to Indian cinema, leaves behind a legacy that spans over six decades.

B Saroja Devi was recognised for her versatile performances, having appeared in more than 200 films across various languages including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Sinhalese. Her ability to connect with audiences across linguistic and cultural barriers earned her a special place in the hearts of many.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi referred to the actress as an "exemplary icon" of Indian film and culture. He acknowledged her broad range of works, highlighting the varied themes she portrayed through her performances.

"Saddened by the passing of the noted film personality, B Saroja Devi Ji. She will be remembered as an exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture. Her diverse performances left an indelible mark across generations. Her works, spanning different languages and covering diverse themes, highlighted her versatile nature. My condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti," he stated.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also paid tribute to the esteemed actress, expressing his sorrow over her passing. In his post on X, he stated, "The news of the passing of senior Kannada actress B Saroja Devi has caused deep sorrow. She had acted in approximately 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, earning fame as the goddess of acting. The moment one mentions Saroja Devi, her captivating performances in films like 'Kittur Chennamma,' 'Babruvahana,' and 'Annathangi' come to mind."

Siddaramaiah lamented the loss to Indian cinema: "Her departure, having entertained audiences for decades through refined films, is a significant loss to Indian cinema. I pray that her soul finds peace. My condolences to her grieving family and fans."

Born on January 7, 1938, in Bengaluru, B Saroja Devi began her film career at the young age of 17, with her debut in the Kannada movie "Mahakavi Kalidasa" released in 1955. Her rise to stardom was rapid, and she became a prominent figure in the industry, co-starring with notable artists such as M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, and N. T. Rama Rao.

She made her entrance into Telugu cinema with the film "Pandurang Mahathyam" in 1957, later achieving great success in Tamil films, particularly with "Nadodi Mannan" in 1958, which solidified her status in Tamil cinema.

Following her marriage in 1967, B Saroja Devi continued to reign as a leading actress in Tamil films until 1974 and remained a celebrated figure in both Telugu and Kannada cinema until the late 1970s. Additionally, she featured in Hindi films, starting with "Paigham" in 1959.

Over her illustrious career, she acted in 161 consecutive films as the female lead between 1955 and 1984, showcasing her enduring appeal.

B Saroja Devi's achievements were formally recognised when she was awarded the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1992. She also received an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University and the Kalaimamani Award from Tamil Nadu. In 2008, she was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The contributions of B Saroja Devi to Indian cinema remain significant, as she is remembered not only for her talent but also for the cultural impact she made throughout her career.
