Elon Musk Launches America Party After Split With Donald Trump
Elon Musk listens as U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference in the Oval Office of the White House, Friday, May 30, 2025, in Washington.
Elon Musk announces the America Party to challenge US politics following his rift with Donald Trump, though details on registration remain unclear.
The billionaire entrepreneur announced the initiative on Saturday through his social media platform, X. The declaration follows weeks of speculation after Musk’s falling out with United States President Donald Trump.

Musk posted, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.” He said the America Party aimed to restore what he described as lost freedoms.

At present, no filings confirming the party’s official registration have appeared in the records of the Federal Election Commission, the body responsible for overseeing political campaigns in the United States.

Musk had previously supported President Trump’s successful 2024 campaign, reportedly contributing $250 million to help secure the presidency. After the election, he was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, commonly referred to as DOGE. The department was tasked with proposing large-scale reductions in federal spending.

However, tensions emerged between Musk and Trump after the president advanced an extensive tax and spending package. The legislation, which President Trump called his “big, beautiful bill,” narrowly passed Congress this week and is expected to add more than $3 trillion to the national deficit over the coming decade.

Musk resigned from his role in May, criticising the bill as fiscally irresponsible. The departure triggered a series of public exchanges, with Trump threatening to end government subsidies benefiting Musk’s companies, which include the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla.

Political observers have noted that while Musk has significant financial resources, establishing a new political party in the United States involves navigating complex requirements. These include ballot access regulations that vary by state, as well as gathering widespread grassroots support.

According to analysts, Musk’s effort could influence congressional elections if he succeeds in fielding candidates in closely contested districts. He has already pledged to fund campaigns against legislators who backed Trump’s bill.

Musk’s announcement referred to an earlier poll he conducted on X, in which he asked users whether a new political party was needed. He cited the results — showing twice as many in favour as opposed — as evidence of public demand.

Context
The United States has a long history of attempts to establish viable third parties. While some movements, such as the Reform Party in the 1990s, achieved temporary influence, the country’s political system strongly favours two dominant parties due to electoral rules and funding structures.

Political experts say Musk’s prominence and personal wealth could help raise the profile of the America Party, but it remains uncertain whether this will translate into sustained electoral success.
