A widespread outage on Google Cloud affected services like Spotify, Amazon Web Services, and Discord, impacting tens of thousands of users across the U.S.
Multiple online services experienced downtime following a technical issue linked to Alphabet Inc.'s Google Cloud. According to Downdetector, a platform that tracks service interruptions through user reports, more than 44,000 users reported problems with Spotify while over 13,000 indicated issues with Google Cloud around 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Other services affected included Google Meet, Google Search, and the messaging app Discord. Downdetector recorded over 4,000 incidents related to Google’s core search engine and Meet platform. Reports concerning Discord reached more than 8,000 cases during the outage.

Google Cloud confirmed the disruption on its official status page, stating that “multiple products [were] experiencing varying levels of service impact.” Engineers were reportedly working to mitigate the issue, with partial recovery noted in some areas. However, no timeline was provided for full resolution.

“We have confirmation that the issue is recovered in some locations,” Google Cloud reported, adding that work was ongoing to restore full service.

Neither Google nor Spotify issued immediate public statements in response to media queries, and Discord representatives were not immediately reachable. Amazon Web Services also appeared to be affected, though specific details regarding the scale of impact were not confirmed.

The cause of the outage has not yet been disclosed. Downdetector, which aggregates status reports from multiple sources, stressed that the figures are based on user submissions and may not represent the complete scale of the disruption.

Context:
Cloud infrastructure underpins a wide range of consumer and enterprise services, meaning outages can quickly cascade across multiple platforms. Google Cloud, one of the three largest global cloud service providers, supports a significant portion of web traffic and application infrastructure worldwide. Disruptions like Thursday’s can affect everything from personal music streaming to business communications.

Such incidents also highlight the interconnectedness and dependence on a few dominant players in the cloud computing market—namely Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure. While most cloud providers build in redundancies, unexpected failures still pose risks to both users and service providers.

Outages of this scale tend to prompt regulatory and industry reviews, particularly if critical services like healthcare or financial transactions are affected. At the time of reporting, no such impacts had been publicly confirmed.
