Andhra Pradesh signs MoU with NVIDIA to set up AI University in Amaravati, aiming to train 10,000 students and foster research, startups, and innovation.
The agreement, signed on Friday, marks a significant move by the Andhra Pradesh government to position the state as a national hub for artificial intelligence (AI). Under the terms of the MoU, NVIDIA will collaborate with the state on skill development, infrastructure planning, startup support, and AI research.
According to state officials, the AI University will serve as a cornerstone of Andhra Pradesh’s long-term technological development strategy. The initiative aims to provide AI-related training to 10,000 engineering students over the next two years, bolstering the state's talent pipeline in advanced technologies.
NVIDIA, a world leader in AI chip development, will offer curriculum support, technical resources, and training modules to engineering colleges throughout Andhra Pradesh. The chipmaker will also play a key role in identifying tools, platforms, and hardware needed to build a world-class educational and research infrastructure at the proposed university.
“This partnership with NVIDIA marks a decisive step in our vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in artificial intelligence,” said Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, and Human Resource Development. “By equipping 10,000 students with cutting-edge AI skills and supporting our startup ecosystem, we are laying the foundation for a future-ready economy driven by innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.”
Beyond education, the collaboration also aims to boost the region’s research capabilities. NVIDIA will assist in identifying and establishing AI research centres focused on solving technological challenges and generating real-world solutions across various sectors.
Vishal Dhupar, NVIDIA’s Managing Director for Asia South, welcomed the initiative: “We are proud to collaborate with the Government of Andhra Pradesh in building a strong and inclusive AI ecosystem. This initiative reflects our commitment to democratising access to AI education, accelerating research, and enabling startups to innovate at scale.”
A notable aspect of the agreement involves the promotion of AI-focused startups. Up to 500 startups from Andhra Pradesh will be eligible to participate in NVIDIA’s Inception Programme, which provides early-stage companies with access to technology, mentorship, and potential investment opportunities. Participation will be subject to the programme’s existing criteria.
The MoU also includes provisions for the creation of next-generation AI Factories—dedicated hubs designed to facilitate innovation, industry partnerships, and talent development. NVIDIA is expected to share best practices from its global operations to guide the state in operationalising these centres.
Context:
The MoU follows discussions held in October 2024 between Andhra Pradesh’s IT Minister Nara Lokesh and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in Mumbai. It forms part of a broader state strategy to integrate AI into governance, education, and industry.
India has seen a surge in interest around AI development in recent years, with both the central and state governments investing in skilling and research infrastructure. Andhra Pradesh’s partnership with NVIDIA reflects a growing trend of aligning with global tech firms to fast-track innovation capabilities.
The establishment of an AI University, in particular, underscores the region's ambition to not only train a new generation of skilled professionals but also attract global attention and investment to its emerging tech sector.
