Mumbai Indians booked the final IPL 2025 playoff berth after a 59-run win over Delhi Capitals, who became the first team to miss playoffs after four opening wins.
Mumbai Cruise Into IPL 2025 Playoffs as Delhi Capitals Miss Out
Mumbai Indians secured the fourth and final playoff spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with a comprehensive 59-run win over Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. The result finalised the playoff line-up, with Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings having already qualified.
The defeat ended Delhi Capitals’ campaign and marked a historic collapse, as they became the first team in IPL history to fail to qualify for the playoffs after winning their first four matches of the season.
Clinical Performance Seals Qualification
Electing to field first after winning the toss, Delhi Capitals made early inroads by reducing Mumbai Indians to 58 for 3 in the seventh over. However, Suryakumar Yadav anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73 off 43 balls, guiding the team to a challenging total of 180 for 5. His innings included seven boundaries and six sixes, and proved decisive on a pitch offering assistance to slower bowlers.
Tilak Varma contributed 27 runs in a stabilising 55-run partnership with Yadav, while Naman Dhir’s late cameo of 24 not out added vital runs in the final overs. Mumbai scored 48 runs in the last two overs alone, capitalising on erratic bowling from Delhi’s Mukesh Kumar and Dushmantha Chameera.
In response, Delhi Capitals faltered early in the chase. The team lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked settled on a surface that offered grip to the spinners. Sameer Rizvi top-scored with 39, but lacked support as no other batter crossed 20, except for Vipraj Nigam and Ashutosh Sharma.
Mitchell Santner exploited the conditions to finish with figures of 3 for 11, while Jasprit Bumrah also claimed three wickets, restricting Delhi to 121 all out in 18.2 overs.
A Turnaround Season for Mumbai
Led by all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians overcame a poor start to the season. After losing four of their first five matches, the five-time champions mounted a strong comeback, winning six consecutive games to keep their playoff hopes alive. Their victory over Delhi, a must-win encounter, ensured they finished in fourth place.
"This was probably above par on that wicket," said Santner after the match. "The slower balls were spinning tonight, which was nice, and we knew we had to vary the pace to take wickets.”
Delhi were without their regular captain Axar Patel, with Faf du Plessis leading the side in his absence. Du Plessis acknowledged that the team lost control during the final phase of Mumbai’s innings. “Momentum is a real thing in cricket,” he said. “We let it slip in the last two overs. They counter-punched and that undid all our work from the first 17 or 18 overs.”
Playoff Schedule Announced
With the league stage complete, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the playoff schedule. The top two teams will meet in Qualifier 1 on 29 May at the Mullanpur Cricket Ground in Punjab. The Eliminator match is set for 30 May at the same venue.
The winner of the Eliminator will face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2, scheduled for 1 June at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The final will be held at the same venue on 3 June.
Context: Delhi’s Collapse and Mumbai’s Momentum
Delhi Capitals' exit from the tournament marks a dramatic downturn after their promising start. Despite early victories, the team struggled with inconsistency in the second half of the season. The absence of their captain and key players further affected their performance during crucial matches.
In contrast, Mumbai’s resurgence reflects the depth of experience within the squad. The leadership of Pandya, complemented by the performances of senior players such as Bumrah and Yadav, helped the team reverse its early setbacks.
This season's IPL has showcased the unpredictability of the format, with major swings in team fortunes and several close playoff races. As Mumbai join the other three contenders in the final stages, attention now shifts to who will emerge victorious in the quest for the 2025 title.
