Aditi Rao Hydari, known for her work in both Hindi and South Indian cinema, made her fourth appearance at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening. She attended the screening of Fuori at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, showcasing Indian couture on the international stage.

The actress wore a strapless, ombré-toned gown designed by Rahul Mishra, a celebrated Indian fashion designer whose work frequently draws on themes from nature and mythology. The dress, part of Mishra’s Aura collection, was previously shown during the Fall/Winter 2024 edition of Paris Couture Week.

The gown featured intricate embroidery created using traditional resham (silk) threads, sequins, glass beads, and hand-applied embellishments. According to Mishra’s atelier, the embroidery process required over 2,600 hours of craftsmanship. The fitted silhouette, gradient shading from deep black to ivory, and sculpted waist added to the dramatic visual effect.

Hydari completed the look with a high-value diamond necklace from Swiss jewellery house Chopard. The necklace, composed of brilliant-cut diamonds arranged in floral motifs, served as the focal point of her ensemble. A matching oval-cut diamond ring and a minimal makeup palette enhanced the overall appearance, while her hair was styled in soft, straight locks parted at the centre.

Styled by Priyanka Kapadia, Hydari opted for subdued tones in her makeup—feathered eyebrows, lightly defined eyes, pink lips, and a glowing highlighter—complementing the ornate textures of the gown.

Celebrating Indian Fashion and Film
Hydari’s presence continues a growing tradition of Indian actors and designers making a mark at Cannes. Since her debut at the festival in 2022, she has consistently highlighted Indian craftsmanship through her wardrobe choices. Her 2025 ensemble was among several Indian fashion statements at this year’s event.

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has featured a significant presence from Indian cinema and talent. Alongside Hydari, other Indian figures at the festival include veteran actors Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal, who attended a screening of Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri, and director Neeraj Ghaywan, whose new film Homebound received a nine-minute standing ovation in the Un Certain Regard section.

Hydari has been widely recognised for her portrayal of Bibbojaan in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, a Netflix period drama directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The series, which marks its one-year anniversary this month, depicts the lives of courtesans in pre-independence India and their evolving political consciousness.

Context: Indian Representation at Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival, held annually in the French resort town, is one of the world’s most prestigious film events. It regularly features international celebrities, directors, and artists, offering a global platform for cinema and fashion.

India’s growing presence at Cannes in recent years reflects both the internationalisation of its film industry and the global appeal of its designers. Designers like Rahul Mishra have used the platform to present hand-crafted Indian couture to a global audience, combining traditional techniques with contemporary design language.

Hydari’s appearance at Cannes 2025 highlights the continuing crossover between Indian cinema, fashion, and global luxury brands. Her collaboration with houses like Chopard and couturiers such as Mishra underscores the increasing visibility of Indian talent on the international stage.

The Cannes Film Festival 2025 runs from 13 to 24 May.
