The IPL 2025 playoffs will see the final held in Ahmedabad on 3 June, with Mullanpur hosting the first two matches, the BCCI has confirmed.
The BCCI confirmed on Tuesday that the closing stages of the 2025 Indian Premier League will be split across two venues, with the high-profile final and Qualifier 2 taking place in Ahmedabad, while New Chandigarh’s Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur will host Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator.
According to the revised schedule, the playoffs will commence on 29 May with Qualifier 1, followed by the Eliminator on 30 May. Qualifier 2 will be held on 1 June, culminating in the final on 3 June.
This update comes after a series of logistical adjustments were necessitated by a week-long suspension of the tournament earlier in the season and growing concerns over the early arrival of the monsoon.
In a statement, the BCCI said: “The new venues for the playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council, keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters.”
Revised Schedule and Venue Changes
Initially, Hyderabad and Kolkata were chosen to host the playoffs. However, these cities have been replaced following changes to the schedule. The BCCI cited practical concerns, including unfavourable weather conditions and the suspension that disrupted the original fixture list.
Additionally, the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, originally scheduled for 23 May in Bengaluru, has been moved to Lucknow. This decision follows a previous fixture at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium being washed out due to rain.
The BCCI has also introduced a one-hour extension to match conditions across the remainder of the league stage to accommodate potential weather delays.
Playoff Qualification Race
Three teams—Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings—have already secured their places in the IPL 2025 playoffs. The final qualification spot remains contested between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals.
The structure of the playoffs remains consistent with previous editions. The top two teams at the end of the league phase will meet in Qualifier 1, with the winner advancing directly to the final. The third and fourth-placed teams will compete in the Eliminator, with the losing side exiting the tournament. The loser of Qualifier 1 will then face the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2 to determine the second finalist.
Context
Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which has hosted the IPL final in both 2022 and 2023, has once again been selected for its size and modern facilities. With a capacity exceeding 130,000, it is the largest cricket stadium in the world and a favoured venue for marquee fixtures.
For Mullanpur, this marks the first time it will host IPL playoff matches. Located in New Chandigarh, the venue has been gradually gaining prominence in domestic and franchise cricket. The decision to host the initial playoff matches there reflects the BCCI’s efforts to expand the tournament’s geographical reach while managing seasonal weather risks.
Earlier in the season, the IPL faced a rare suspension owing to military tensions between India and Pakistan, which delayed several matches and led to a compressed fixture calendar. As a result, the BCCI opted to relocate the playoffs to venues with more reliable weather conditions and logistical advantages.
With the adjustments now confirmed, attention turns to the final matches of the league stage, which will determine the final playoff standings and the path each team must take toward the title.
