Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his best wishes for a speedy recovery to former United States President Joe Biden, following the announcement that Mr Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

The diagnosis was confirmed on Sunday by Mr Biden’s office, which stated that the 82-year-old former president is suffering from a “more aggressive form” of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. The statement added that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for more effective management options.

Mr Biden served as the 46th President of the United States from 2021 to 2025 and was the oldest person to hold the office. His health condition came to light after he began experiencing urinary symptoms on Friday.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” said the statement from his office. The Gleason score—a system used to grade the aggressiveness of prostate cancer—was reported to be 9, placing it in the highest risk category for rapid progression.

The statement also noted that Mr Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.

Modi Expresses Support
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his concern via a message on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote: “Deeply concerned to hear about @JoeBiden's health. Extend our best wishes to him for a quick and full recovery. Our thoughts are with Dr. Jill Biden and the family.”

Global Reaction
Mr Biden’s diagnosis has prompted an outpouring of support from global leaders and political figures across the spectrum.

Former US President Donald Trump, who was a vocal critic and political rival of Mr Biden, also offered well-wishes. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Mr Trump wrote, “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Former President Barack Obama expressed his support on X, referencing Mr Biden’s long-standing advocacy for cancer research. “Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery,” Mr Obama said.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who served under President Biden, also shared a message of solidarity: “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” she posted on X.

Biden’s Cancer Advocacy
Mr Biden has been a prominent advocate for cancer research since losing his son Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015. That personal loss became the driving force behind the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative, a federal programme aimed at accelerating cancer research, reducing cancer deaths, and improving patient outcomes.

His recent diagnosis adds a deeply personal layer to his ongoing commitment to fighting the disease.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, particularly in older age groups. According to the World Health Organization, prostate cancer accounted for over 1.4 million new cases globally in 2020. While many cases progress slowly and can be effectively treated, aggressive forms—such as the one reported in Mr Biden’s case—require prompt and intensive medical intervention.

A Gleason score of 9 indicates that the cancer cells are likely to grow and spread quickly, making early and targeted treatment essential. Hormone therapy is a common approach for hormone-sensitive prostate cancers, often used in combination with other treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy.

Conclusion:
As the former US President and his family evaluate treatment options, well-wishers from around the world continue to express their hope for his recovery. His diagnosis has also drawn renewed attention to global cancer awareness and research efforts, a cause Mr Biden has long championed.
