A police constable in Jodhpur, India, has been suspended after video footage emerged showing him slapping a cafe worker during a dispute over coffee. The clip, which spread widely on social media, prompted immediate disciplinary action.

A constable in the Indian state of Rajasthan has been suspended from duty after a CCTV recording surfaced showing him assaulting a cafe employee during an altercation.

The incident occurred at a local cafe named Tau ki Tapri, located near the police lines in Jodhpur, a city in western India known for its historical architecture and military establishments.

According to the footage, the police officer, identified as Kishan Singh, became verbally aggressive when informed that coffee was temporarily unavailable. Singh, who was attached to the District Special Team (DST) in Jodhpur’s East district, reportedly demanded the contact number of the cafe’s owner when refused service.

The video shows Singh initially attempting to strike the employee from across the counter. When the staff member did not comply with his demands, Singh walked around the counter and slapped him. A female customer was reportedly present during the altercation.

The incident was captured on closed-circuit television and circulated widely on social media platforms, drawing public criticism and calls for accountability.

In response, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Jodhpur East, Alok Srivastava, ordered Singh’s immediate suspension. Authorities described the action as necessary to uphold police discipline and public trust.

“Constable Kishan Singh has been suspended with immediate effect after the video of the incident came to light,” Srivastava said in a statement to local media.

Past Allegations Surface
This is not the first time Constable Singh has come under scrutiny. He is currently facing charges in connection with a controversial police encounter involving a man named Lovely Kandara. That case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s premier federal agency tasked with probing serious crimes.

Singh, along with four other officers, is accused of misconduct in the encounter, which has drawn national attention due to allegations of excessive force. His name has also reportedly been linked to other disciplinary issues in the past, though details have not been officially released.

Public Reaction and Official Response
The footage has triggered concern among citizens and civil society organisations about the conduct of law enforcement personnel. In India, incidents of police misconduct occasionally come to public notice through video evidence, sparking debates about training, accountability, and institutional reform.

While the Rajasthan Police have not issued a broader statement beyond confirming the suspension, the episode is expected to be reviewed further for any possible legal implications or departmental action.

Jodhpur is one of Rajasthan’s major urban centres and home to several law enforcement training institutions. Like many parts of India, the city has experienced public scrutiny of police behaviour, particularly in an era where mobile phone recordings and surveillance cameras frequently expose incidents of misconduct.

India’s police forces operate under the dual control of state and central governments, with disciplinary actions such as suspensions typically managed at the state level. In recent years, various Indian states have introduced internal oversight bodies and public grievance systems to improve police accountability.

However, critics argue that the mechanisms remain underutilised or ineffective in many cases, and that visible action—such as immediate suspension following public outcry—is often reactive rather than preventative.

The current case in Jodhpur has once again highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour by public servants and the increasing role of digital evidence in enforcing accountability.
