She is visiting India along with the EU College of Commissioners
Accompanied by the European Union College of Commissioners, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in New Delhi on Thursday on a two-day (February 27-28) visit.

This was the European Commission President’s third visit to India. She has earlier visited India for a bilateral official visit in April 2022, and to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in September 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ursula von der Leyen have also met regularly on the sidelines of multilateral meetings.

This was the first ever visit of the EU College of Commissioners together to India and among the first such visits since the start of the mandate of the current European Commission in December 2024 after the European parliamentary elections held in June 2024.

The visit took place at the time when India and the EU wanted to strengthen their relations on issues like connectivity, trade, technology, defence, and security.

India and the European Union have been strategic partners since 2004 and their bilateral ties have expanded and deepened across a wide range of areas.

As the two sides enter the third decade of the strategic partnership, the visit of President von der Leyen and the EU College of Commissioners will pave the way for further strengthening of bilateral relations based on growing convergences.

Besides trade and technology, India and EU, as strategic partners, have often reiterated their shared commitment to promoting a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

India has welcomed the European Union’s increasing engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides emphasized that the rules-based international order must respect sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful resolution of disputes.

Both sides have underscored the need for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with international law and consistent with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
