“Relevant departments and agencies are looking into this matter,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday reacted to a recent allegation by US President Donald Trump that American aid funds were used to interfere in India’s electoral process.
“We have seen information that has been put out by the US administration regarding certain USA activities and funding. These are obviously very deeply troubling. This has led to concerns about foreign interference in India’s internal affairs. Relevant departments and agencies are looking into this matter. It would be premature to make a public comment at this stage, so relevant authorities are looking into it, and hopefully we can come up with an update on that subsequently,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on February 21 during a weekly media briefing.
US President Donald Trump, in a speech in Miami on February 19, said, “Why do we need to spend $21m for voter turnout in India? Wow, $21m! I guess they were trying to get somebody else elected.” He repeated the same allegation while addressing the Republican Governors Association meeting in Washington DC on February 20, President Trump said, “$21 million for voter turnout in India. Why are we caring about India's turnout? We got enough problems. We want our own turnout.”
Earlier on February 16, the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced that it had cancelled USAID funding of $21 million for voter turnout in India.
