India pledges NPR 47.4 crore for 12 High-Impact Development Projects in Nepal
Officials from India and Nepal sign MoUs for 12 community development projects in Kathmandu on September 27, 2024.
All projects will be implemented in collaboration with Nepal’s local authorities to ensure alignment with regional needs and priorities
India has committed NPR 47.4 crore (INR 474 million) for the construction of 12 High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal, focusing on sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, drinking water, and culture. The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for these projects were signed on Friday (September 27, 2024) by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and Nepal’s Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration.

This initiative, part of India’s longstanding support for Nepal’s grassroots development, comes under a grant assistance agreement aimed at improving essential infrastructure and services in various Nepali communities.

The 12 projects, spread across various districts in Nepal, target key areas of community development. They include:

The Basepu-Hulu Water Supply Project in Solukhumbu: This project aims to improve access to clean drinking water for residents, addressing one of the key needs of the area.

The Agriculture Promotion Centre for Food Grain Collection and Distribution in Bajura: This facility will help farmers in Bajura store and distribute agricultural products more efficiently, improving food security and reducing post-harvest losses.

A Health Post and Birthing Centre in Dhading: The new health facility will provide crucial healthcare services, especially for maternal and child health, in the region.

The Operation Theatre Building for Rapti Eye Hospital in Dang: Enhancing the hospital’s capacity, this project will provide better surgical facilities for treating eye diseases, which is a significant health issue in the area.

All projects will be implemented in collaboration with Nepal’s local authorities to ensure alignment with regional needs and priorities.

India has been a key partner in Nepal’s development efforts for decades, and this recent pledge of NPR 47.4 crore continues a tradition of strong bilateral cooperation. Since 2003, India has supported more than 563 High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal, including the 12 for which MoUs were signed, and 490 of these have already been completed. The remaining projects are in various stages of implementation.

These development projects have provided a wide range of infrastructure and services, such as schools, hospitals, drinking water systems, and cultural preservation initiatives, across many rural and urban areas in Nepal.

“As close neighbours, India and Nepal share wide-ranging and multi-sectoral cooperation. The implementation of HICDPs reflects the continued support of the Government of India in bolstering the efforts of the Government of Nepal in upliftment of its people by augmenting infrastructure in priority sectors,” the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said.
