General Manoj Pande, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of India, began a significant four-day visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan on April 15, 2024. This visit underscores a pivotal moment in strengthening the defence ties and collaborative efforts between India and Uzbekistan.

Engagements with Uzbek Defence Leaders


On his first day, General Pande will engage in key discussions with Uzbekistan’s top defense leadership, including Lieutenant General Bakhodir Kurbanov, the Defence Minister of Uzbekistan; Major General Khalmukhamedov Shukhrat Gayratjanovich, the First Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces; and Major General Burkhanov Ahmed Jamalovich, the Deputy Minister and Chief of Air and Air Defence Forces. These dialogues are crucial for bolstering military cooperation between the two nations.

Cultural and Historical Engagements

General Pande's itinerary also features a visit to the Armed Forces Museum, offering insights into Uzbekistan’s rich military history. The tour continues to the Hast Imam Ensemble, a significant cultural site, where the achievements and historical narratives of Uzbekistan were showcased.

On April 16, the COAS will pay his respects to late Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India, by laying a wreath at his monument. Subsequently, General Pande will visit Victory Park, which commemorates Uzbekistan’s sacrifices in the Second World War.

The day’s engagements also include a visit to the Centre for Innovative Technologies LLC. Here, General Pande is expected to explore the advanced defense technology initiatives being undertaken by Uzbekistan, highlighting the country's strides in military innovations.

Strengthening Educational and Military Links

Further fostering Indo-Uzbek ties, General Pande will visit the Uzbekistan Armed Forces Academy where he will inaugurate an IT lab established with India’s assistance. The defence cooperation holds underlying educational and technological initiatives as a broader framework of their agenda.

On April 17, General Pande will travel to Samarkand to meet with the Commander of the Central Military District, reinforcing the strategic military dialogue. The visit will culminate in Termez on April 18, where General Pande will witness the Joint Exercise DUSTLIK. 

Additionally, General Pande will visit the Termez Museum and various historical monuments in the Surkhandarya Region, where he appreciated Uzbekistan’s rich cultural landscape and historical heritage.

The primary objective of General Manoj Pande's visit was to reinforce and expand military cooperation between India and Uzbekistan. By engaging in high-level discussions, participating in joint military exercises, and exploring new avenues for collaboration, this visit plays a crucial role in the strategic partnership between the two nations.
