Adding to the momentum in the India-Bhutan development partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a state-of-the-art mother and child hospital in Thimphu on Saturday (March 23, 2024).

The development of the 150-bedded Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital has been supported by the Indian government.

"Inaugurated the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital, which stands as a beacon of hope for several families, offering quality healthcare. This facility embodies a commitment to nurturing a healthy future generation," Prime Minister Modi, who was on a two-day visit to Bhutan, posted on social media platform X.

The new facility will house state-of-the-art facilities for Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Anaesthesiology, Operation Theatre, Neonatal Intensive Care and Paediatric Intensive Care. The Hospital was constructed in two phases. The Phase one of the Hospital was constructed at a cost of Rs. 22 Crores and has been operational since 2019.

The construction of the second phase was taken up in 2019, as part of the 12th Five Year Plan at a cost of Rs. 119 Crores, and was completed now.

"The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital stands as a shining example of India-Bhutan partnership in health-care," the MEA said.

India has consistently supported Bhutan’s socio-economic development by contributing to its 5-Year Plans since the early 1960s.

The basic framework of the enduring India-Bhutan relations is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1949, and revised in 2007. India established diplomatic ties with Bhutan in 1968 by setting up a special office in Thimphu.
