India strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms, PM Modi says
India stands firmly with Israel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday (October 10, 2023) after his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with him on phone and updated him on the ongoing situation after the terrorist attacks on Israel by Hamas.
Condemning terrorism in all its forms, Prime Minister Modi expressed solidarity with Israel at this difficult time.
"I thank Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his phone call and providing an update on the ongoing situation. People of India stand firmly with Israel in this difficult hour. India strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," Prime Minister Modi posted on X.
Hamas militants had crossed into Israel on October 7, firing at least 2,500 rockets into the country by late Saturday (October 7, 2023) morning, according to media reports citing the Israeli military.
As the war between Israel and Hamas entered the fourth day, media reports said that the death toll on both sides has surpassed 1,600.
About 900 people have died in Israel, including 260 people who were shot by Hamas gunmen at a music festival near the Gaza border. At the same time, in Palestine, over 700 people are reported to have died in the retaliatory action from Tel Aviv.
Israel and Palestinian militants have been locked in a bloody conflict since Hamas took power in Gaza in 2007.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier expressed his deep shock over the news of the terrorist attacks on Israel.
“Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour,” Prime Minister Modi said in his post on X on Saturday.
Meanwhile, in a joint statement, the leaders of US, UK, France, Germany and Italy called Hamas' actions horrifying and warned against any country trying to take advantage of the current crisis in Israel.
"We make clear that the terrorist actions of Hamas have no justification, no legitimacy, and must be universally condemned. There is never any justification for terrorism. In recent days, the world has watched in horror as Hamas terrorists massacred families in their homes, slaughtered over 200 young people enjoying a music festival, and kidnapped elderly women, children, and entire families, who are now being held as hostages," the statement said.
"Our countries will support Israel in its efforts to defend itself and its people against such atrocities. We further emphasize that this is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage," it added.
